Swedish patient and breast cancer survivor, Christine Smith started Northwest Hope & Healing Foundation in 2000 when she realized how many women diagnosed with cancer face a shortfall at the end of the month for basic items like food, gas, daycare and rent. To date, the NW Hope & Healing Patient Assistance Fund has helped more than 1,300 women battling breast and gynecological cancer, with basic living expenses like food, gas & emergency rent payments.
Each year Swedish diagnoses and treats over 900 women with breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay. NW Hope & Healing Foundation partners with Swedish, to ensure that women don’t have to choose between seeking treatment and having food on the table, childcare during treatments, or a roof over their heads.
In addition to financial assistance, NW Hope & Healing volunteers assemble Healing Baskets which are distributed to newly diagnosed breast cancer patient at Swedish's campuses. The Healing Baskets are filled with items such as a teddy bear that can be held during treatment, soothing hand lotion, herbal tea, hard candies, and handmade cards or notes of encouragement. The items are intended to provide comfort, offer encouragement, and carry a message of hope.
I encourage you to participate in their upcoming event, the Alki Beach 5k Walk & Run on Sunday August 28, 2011, If you would like to support the NW Hope & Healing Patient Assistance Fund.
Register today to walk or run to celebrate a survivor, honor someone you’ve lost to breast cancer, or just want to support friends, family and co-workers, everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.
